2018 Sybil Nash Abrams Student Poetry Contest Winners

Pegasus, the winged horse, symbol of poetic inspiration.

Sponsored by the Poets Roundtable of Arkansas (PRA), this year’s Sybil Nash Abrams Student Contest received entries from 88 Arkansas middle, junior, and senior high schools.

Cash awards for first, second, and third place winners of the Abrams contest are

$1,000, $400, and $250.

Winners in the Senior Division:

First Place: Annie Knight, Little Rock Central, “A Mother’s Arms.”

Second Place: Raehana Anwar, Mount Saint Mary, “i am six.”

Third Place: Stephanie Verdaris, Mount Saint Mary, “Texas and Arkansas.”

First Honorable Mention: Hannah Brockette, Mount Saint Mary, “Lake Days.”

Second Honorable Mention: Grace Cassie, Mount Saint Mary, “Love Letter.”

Third Honorable Mention: Grace Rew, North Little Rock Homeschool, “Desirable.”

 

Winners in the Junior Division

First Place: Evie Kinsey, Benton Middle School, “If I could say one thing, it would probably be.”

Second Place: Beth Freudensprung, Benton Middle School, “Dewdrop.”

Third Place: Jacob McGinness, Little Rock, Our Lady of the Holy Souls, “Waves.”

First Honorable Mention: McKenzie Young, Sylvan Hills Middle School, “Insanity.”

Second Honorable Mention: Naomi Morris, Benton Middle School, “Longing for knowing of happiness unknown.”

Third Honorable Mention: Millie Allgood, Little Rock, Our Lady of the Holy Souls, “If only you knew.”

Judges were Ann Carolyn Cates and Cathy Moran.
