Arkansas Writer Adele Holmes publishes Southern Gothic Novel

Cover, Winter's Reckoning Retired pediatrician from Central Arkansas Adele Holmes has published Winter’s Reckoning, a Southern gothic novel set in 1917 southern Appalachia.

The book, published by SheWritesPress, won two pre-publication awards: Honorable mention in the William Faulkner Literary Competition, and First Place in the Chanticleer International Book Awards (Goethe Award).

The novel’s protagonist, Madeline Fairbanks, a herbalist healer in a small Appalachian town, draws criticism when she hires a Black apprentice. All she suffers at first are disapproving grumbles, but when a racist preacher comes to town and urges the importance of racial segregation, the local KKK comes to life and places Maddie and her unwelcome progressive ideas in their sights.

Winter’s Reckoning is available in both print and ebook editions wherever books are sold.
