Enlightened by Literature

If you have both a love of literature and an interest in current affairs, you will want to explore the site Better Living Through Beowulf.

The creation of Robin R. Bates, a Maryland English professor, BLTB interprets current affairs in terms of literature. For example, this week he discusses the shooting of 14-year-old women’s activist Malala Yousafzai in the light of Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale.

Bates has addressed the current angry political scene in a book, How Beowulf Can Save America: An Epic Hero’s Guide to Defeating the Politics of Rage. Kindle owners can download it free between October 21-25, 2012. After these dates you can buy the Kindle edition for $5 and the print edition for $8.95 at Amazon.
