Arkansas author Madelyn F. Young will celebrate the release of her new book, Views from an Empty Nest: Award-Winning Tales Written after Fifty, with a book-signing party on Friday, April 20, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., in Hoffius Hall of Presbyterian Kirk in the Pines, 275 Asturias Drive, Hot Springs Village.
In her collection of thirty-one award-winning stories and essays, Young shares tales of family loyalty and love, discord, and intrigue as she poignantly reflects on a life well lived. She takes real-life experiences and transforms them into compelling accounts that sometimes take surprising twists in the end.
In “Nature’s Gift,” Young highlights the rediscovery of the ivory-billed woodpecker in eastern Arkansas in 2004; in “Lost and Found,” she contemplates what it would be like to pick up litter on the roadside and then stumble across something unusual. “Good Intentions” details a moving moment when she was a student teacher and brought home a bedraggled girl who needed just one thing—love.
Young says, “All of us have stories. I’m sure readers of my book will recall similar incidents that would make good tales to collect and share with their families and friends. I hope my book will inspire them to do that.”
Madelyn F. Young has won numerous state and local awards for her short stories, memoirs, and essays. A retired teacher and school administrator, Young is active in the Village Writers’ Club in Hot Springs Village, Arkansas, where she lives with her husband, Robin. They have three children and five grandchildren.
“As a youngster, I loved to write stories,” Young recalls. “I remember my fifth grade teacher let me stand in front of the class and read my tales, and my classmates would laugh and clap. I was hooked! Later, after raising my family, I returned to my childhood passion. The title of my book, Views from an Empty Nest, seems quite appropriate, I think.”
Madelyn Young invites the public to her book-release celebration to “hear a story and enjoy cookies and lemonade.” Young will sign copies of Views from an Empty Nest—available for purchase at the event.
