New Flesh for Old Monsters: A Writing Workshop at FPL

Brad Carter

Got a taste for horror? Join Brad Carter with “New Flesh for Old Monsters” on July 22 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm in the Henry Board Room at the Fayetteville Public Library. Workshop is free with registration required beginning May 1, 2017.

Horror as a genre carries a lot of cliché baggage. Vampires, witches, zombies, demons—they’ve all been done to death. However, there are still fresh approaches available to these genre tropes. From Bram Stoker’s Dracula to Max Brooks’ World War Z to Paul Tremblay’s A Head Full of Ghosts, horror writers have successfully experimented with narrative form to inject new life into tired monsters.

This free workshop will focus on stripping away cliché, undermining audience expectations, and avoiding redundancy when writing about horror archetypes. Registration is required.

Brad Carter likes to put words together in interesting combinations. He is a product of the public school system in Arkansas, and he hopes that if he writes well enough his permanent record will be expunged. His 2013 novel (dis)Comfort Food was hailed by Publisher’s Weekly as “an unsettling story…where familiar ingredients bring unexpected results.” In 2015, Library Journal recommended his novel Only Things as a strong addition to horror collections. His other novels include The Big Man of Barlow, Saturday Night of the Living Dead, and Barlow After Dark. His sixth novel and second child are both forthcoming in 2017. He lives in Northwest Arkansas.
